Zorinsky Lake Park is a large outdoor recreation area located in West Omaha near 156th and F Streets. It spans over 1,000 acres and includes a 255-acre lake. The park is named after U.S. Senator Edward Zorinsky, who represented Nebraska. Managed by the City of Omaha, the park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. It is one of the city's largest and most visited parks, offering a mix of natural beauty and recreational activities for people of all ages.
The park was created as part of a flood control project after the Papillion Creek area experienced major flooding in the 1960s. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a dam to hold back water and prevent future damage. The lake began to fill in 1984, and the dam was officially completed in 1989. The land was later leased to the City of Omaha, and Zorinsky Lake Park officially opened to the public in 1993. Since then, it has grown into a popular place for both recreation and wildlife conservation.
Zorinsky Lake Park features more than 7 miles of paved walking and biking trails. These trails loop around the lake and are marked every tenth of a mile, making them easy to follow. A major highlight of the park is the 190-acre Bauermeister Prairie. This protected area is home to more than 120 native plant and animal species. The surrounding public land totals about 770 acres and includes woodlands, open fields, and scenic spots for watching birds or enjoying quiet walks in nature.
The park is a favorite spot for outdoor activities. It offers fishing, boating, and sports facilities. Fishing is popular in the lake, with common catches including largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and walleye. Boats are allowed but must follow a no-wake rule with a speed limit of 5 mph. There is a public boat ramp on the east side of the lake. On land, the park has two playgrounds, baseball and soccer fields, football areas, picnic shelters with grills, restrooms, and a fishing dock that is wheelchair accessible. These features make the park a great spot for families, fitness lovers, and outdoor groups.
Zorinsky Lake Park is known for its rich wildlife. Visitors often see deer, wild turkeys, songbirds, ducks, and geese. The park is also a top spot for bird watching throughout the year. In the winter, when the lake freezes, ice fishing becomes a popular activity. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission regularly stocks the lake with fish, including bass and walleye. In 2010, the lake faced an issue with zebra mussels—an invasive species. To help stop their spread, the lake level was temporarily lowered by more than 17 feet.
Zorinsky Lake Park is open to everyone and does not charge any entry fee. It is pet-friendly, with leashed dogs welcome throughout the park. Parking is available at multiple points along 156th and 168th Streets, and the trails are easy to access by foot or bike. The park is popular year-round for walking, jogging, biking, fishing, and relaxing with family or friends. Many locals enjoy the calm setting, especially at sunrise or sunset, when the light reflects off the lake and the views are especially peaceful.
