The Archway, officially known as the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument, is located just off Interstate 80 in Kearney, Nebraska, at Exit 275. This unique structure spans the entire width of the interstate and functions as a museum that tells the story of America's westward expansion. It is the only attraction of its kind in the U.S. that is built directly over a major highway. Its central location makes it an easy and memorable stop for travelers moving through Nebraska.
Construction on The Archway began in 1997, and the monument officially opened to the public in 2000. The structure is about 310 feet longand weighs more than 1,500 tons. It was assembled nearby and then moved into place above I-80 using large cranes and support towers. The design of the building resembles a covered bridge, but it is much larger and built to last. The Archway serves both as an engineering feat and a symbol of Nebraska’s connection to cross-country migration and transportation history.
Inside The Archway, visitors take a self-guided tourthat covers over 170 years of American travel and migration. The exhibits follow the journey of pioneers, gold seekers, and settlers who traveled on the Oregon, Mormon, and California Trails, as well as the later development of the Pony Express, transcontinental railroad, and the Lincoln Highway. These stories are brought to life through life-size dioramas, sound effects, and narrated audio guides. Each section of the exhibit recreates a different time period and allows visitors to walk through scenes such as a covered wagon camp, a frontier town, and a railroad depot.
The Archway offers a variety of educational programsfor school groups, scouts, and families. These include interactive workshops, guided tours, and special eventsthroughout the year. The attraction also features a theater, a gift shop, and a small café/snack barinside the building. Outdoors, there are walking trails, a small lake, and picnic areas, making it a great place to relax after the museum tour. The Archway is also used as a learning center for Nebraska history and has become a key stop for heritage tourism in the state.
