📍 Location And Overview
Lake McConaughy, also called “Lake Mac,” is located about 9 miles north of Ogallala, Nebraska. It is the largest reservoir in the state and a major destination for both locals and visitors. The lake is part of the Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area, managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. With its vast shoreline and open waters, Lake McConaughy offers opportunities for outdoor fun year-round.

Lake McConaughy stretches approximately 22 miles longand 4 miles wide, covering nearly 35,700 acreswhen full. It can reach depths of up to 142 feetnear the dam. The lake was created between 1936 and 1941to store water for irrigationand to support hydropowerfor surrounding communities. Its water is held back by Kingsley Dam, one of the largest earthen dams in the United States.
🚧 Kingsley Dam
Kingsley Damis located on the eastern edge of the lake. It is a hydraulic-fill earthen dam, standing 162 feet talland stretching 3.1 miles long. At the time it was built, it was one of the largest of its kind in the world. The dam helps control water flow for farms in central Nebraska and also supports hydroelectric power production. Next to the dam is the Kingsley Hydroelectric Plant, which has been in operation since the 1980s.

Lake McConaughy is known for its fishing, boating, and camping. Anglers come here for species like walleye, catfish, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. The lake holds the Nebraska state record for walleye at over 16 pounds. Boaters enjoy a wide range of water activities, including jet skiing, sailing, and parasailing. There are boat ramps and rental services around the lake.

Near Kingsley Dam, the Lake McConaughy Visitor and Water Interpretive Centerprovides educational exhibits about water use, wildlife, and the lake’s history.
