It opened in April 2023as part of the city’s riverfront redevelopment project. The center was developed by Omaha Discovery Trustand named after the Kiewit Corporation, a major donor and construction partner. The facility spans over 82,000 square feetand is designed to be a hands-on science and discovery center that blends learning with play for people of all ages.
The Luminarium was designed by HDR Architecture, a well-known Omaha-based firm. The building features a modern, industrial look with a glowing perforated aluminum exteriorthat lights up at night, making it a visual landmark on the riverfront. Inside, the space is left mostly unfinished to allow for flexibility. Exhibits, walls, and program areas can be rearranged easily depending on events and educational needs.
Kiewit Luminarium offers over 125 interactive exhibitsthat explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). These exhibits are spread across four themed zones:
- Catch Waves: Focuses on light, sound, and movement using mirrors, waves, and shadows.
- Dig Deeper: Highlights nature, structures, water flow, and chain reactions.
- Find Yourself: Explores the human body, emotions, community, and social science.
- Make It Count: Teaches math, patterns, and problem-solving through games and visuals.
Each zone encourages visitors to ask questions, test ideas, and collaborate with others. The center’s layout supports hands-on discovery and learning by doing.
The Luminarium offers more than just exhibits. It also includes:
- The Grid: A tall, two-story feature that looks at how technology, cities, and systems are built and connected.
- Night Light Events: Evening programs for adults that mix science, music, and drinks in a fun social setting.
- Event Rentals: The building can host workshops, company events, school programs, and private parties. It can accommodate up to 1,000 people.
Local organizations, including Omaha Public Library, offer free or discounted admission passes to make the center more accessible.
