📍 What Is Golden Spike Tower?

Golden Spike Tower is a tall observation tower located in North Platte, Nebraska. It overlooks Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard, the largest rail yard in the world. From the top of the tower, visitors can see trains being moved, sorted, and repaired. It gives people a rare view of how large freight train systems work. The tower has become one of Nebraska’s top attractions for both train lovers and general tourists.

🏗️ History And Construction

Planning for the Golden Spike Tower began in the late 1990s. After many years of effort and fundraising, the tower officially opened on June 16, 2008. It cost around $6 millionto build. The idea was to give visitors a clear, high view of Bailey Yard and to honor the long history of Union Pacific in the region. The name "Golden Spike" is a reference to the famous golden railroad spike used to mark the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869.

👀 What You Can See And Do

The tower has two main observation decks. The seventh flooris open-air, so visitors can hear the sounds of the trains and feel the vibrations as they pass below. The eighth flooris enclosed with large windows and offers a quieter viewing experience. Binoculars are available so guests can zoom in on parts of the yard. The views stretch across hundreds of train tracks, engine shops, and repair buildings.
Inside the visitor center, there are displays, historical exhibits, and a gift shop. You can learn about the history of Union Pacific, the role of railroads in World War II, and the story of the North Platte Canteen, where volunteers once served food to soldiers. There is also a Hall of Famethat honors railroad workers and their contributions.

👨‍🏫 Guides And Exhibits

The tower is staffed by helpful volunteers, many of whom are retired Union Pacific workers. These guides share real-life stories about working in Bailey Yard and explain how the trains are sorted and maintained. Their knowledge adds depth to the visitor experience, especially for people who are new to the world of trains. The exhibits are designed to be interactive and easy to understand for both adults and children.
