Carhenge is a replica of England’s famous Stonehenge, but instead of using large stones, it was built with old American cars. These cars are painted gray and arranged in a circle, just like the original Stonehenge. It is located just outside the small city of Alliance in western Nebraska. Carhenge is one of the most unique roadside attractions in the United States and draws visitors from across the country.
Carhenge was built in 1987 by Jim Reinders and his family. Jim had lived in England for a while and studied the structure of Stonehenge. When his father passed away, he wanted to honor him in a creative way. So, Jim and about 35 family members came together for a family reunion and built Carhenge on his father’s farmland. The entire project took just six days to complete, and it quickly became a local and national attraction.
Carhenge is made from 39 cars, including classic models from the 1950s to the 1980s. These cars are placed in a circle about 96 feet wide. Some are standing vertically, buried halfway into the ground, while others are welded together to form arches and crossbeams. The "heel stone" is a 1962 Cadillac, placed to match the position of the real heel stone at Stonehenge in England. All the cars are painted gray to resemble aged stones. Nearby, there are other car sculptures as well, like a fish, a dinosaur, and a piece called “Fourd Seasons” made from old Ford cars.
In 2006, a small visitor center called The Pit Stopwas added to the site. It provides information, souvenirs, and restrooms for guests. In 2013, Jim Reinders donated Carhenge and the 10-acre land it sits on to the City of Alliance. It is now managed by the local government and kept open to the public. Visitors can explore the site for free, and it is open every day from sunrise to sunset.
When it was first built, some people in the area didn’t like Carhenge. They thought it was strange or not serious art. But over time, it gained popularity and respect. Now, it attracts more than 100,000 visitors every year. It has been featured in movies, music videos, and even a documentary. During the 2017 total solar eclipse, thousands of people came to Carhenge to watch the event. In 2022, it won a Traveler’s Choice award from TripAdvisor and continues to receive strong reviews online.
